5K Run At Sixty One in Under 30 Minutes

One week to the day I decided to challenge myself yet again. I was very proud of myself for running 5k on the treadmill last week as expressed in my entry called: 5k Run at Sixty One. Running that 5K in 32 minutes and 40 seconds was awesome believe me. I shocked myself in being able to accomplish it. But i KNEW i could do better.

I was feeling pretty damn good. I was full of confidence. I didn’t run at all for the entire week. I did however have two leg workout days, one being on the day before this new challenge I set up for myself. I more mentally prepared for this attempt than anything. I visualized myself finishing the 5K like I had the previous week. I also visualized myself doing it in under 30 minutes.

I have to be completely honest here. Starting the run at 10.1 km/h I was about a minute in when the negative thoughts started pouring in. “There’s NO WAY you’re gonna make it”, “Why did I even started this”, This is NOT gonna happen today”. I shut them all down. I screamed in my mind “SHUT THE F#%k UP!” “I GOT THIS!”.

This is a great example of mind over might. Ok sure, I am in pretty good shape for being 61. I worked hard to be in the shape I’m in. But, I am NOT a runner. I don’t run daily. I can’t even say I run weekly. Not long term anyway. But when you set your mind to something and then align your heart and soul with whatever’s on your mind, you will be surprised what you can accomplish.

Between challenging myself near daily, and mixing it up just trying new healthy activities has made this an incredible journey. I really hope I inspire someone to join in. I started this run like I said at 10.1 km/h and a head full of negativity. As I commanded my thoughts, and then my body to follow my lead, my spirit prevailed. As the minutes went by I gradually increased the speed finishing at 11.7 km/h. The rush was indescribable. Better than any liquids or narcotics I abused as a young adult. There is NOTHING like a natural high. You can check out a short video I posted on my TikTok right here: Thank you for checking this out.
