Reaching Goals 5k

So about a week or so after I did some running we were blessed with a beautiful sunny May day. My first thought as I seen the sun shining was that it was a good day to go for a run so I strapped up.

As I mentioned I had tried to do a little running (Run Forest Run) and for whatever reason I had, being able to run 5k come to my mind. I didn’t do so well my first day out. I had done a bit better my second time out and much better on my third time running about 2.5k. I had planned on running 2.5k again before attempting 5k but I never got around to it. What the hell I thought, I’m gonna just go for it.

I asked my wife if she’d pick me up in about 30 minutes. She thought I was nuts for trying it but she agreed. I had already marked out 5k starting outside my front door. I did some stretching and it was funny because my son was asking me if I was hurt or something. I explained that I was stretching so that I wouldn’t get hurt. He instantly started stretching with me.

As I set out running my mind was flooded with doubts. I quickly shut them down saying to myself I got this over and over again. Only once did I truly think of stopping just as I was passing the 3k mark. That was about when my wife drove slowly passing me and I got a glimpse of my son sitting in the back seat. I waved and then I dug in. There was no way in hell I was gonna give up now.

I gotta tell you I was damn proud of myself. It was only my fourth time out and I had reached my little goal of running 5k (3.1 miles). Ok it wasn’t the New York City Marathon or anything but for me it kind of was. It spoke to me and let me say that it said a lot. With a minimal amount of effort I made some incredible progress. Running that 5k was just as much a mental workout as it was a physical one and it sure lifted my spirt. Seeing my sons face light up as he seen my excitement was priceless.

I enjoyed reaching this goal very much but I still wasn’t big on the running thing. I just figured maybe every now and then I could run just to mix things up. I did set myself a new goal though. Next time out I would go for 8k (5 miles). But for now, I was very pleased with this 5k under my belt. Thank you for reading.
