Mic Check 1-3-1-2

I had mentioned in an earlier post that I had started throwing music rehearsals into the mix. I wanted to share a little more on this. My passion has been music for a very long time especially performing live. There is just something about rocking a crowd I’ll tell you. Of course making music and performing live became a hell of a lot more difficult once I was hit with Ménière's disease but I was determined to not let it stop me and I am still there.

I haven’t performed nearly as much as I would have liked to over the last few years. There are many reasons why but hands down my battle against this disease has been the number one cause, it’s really been kicking my ass. My love of music and performing was definitely one of the big reasons for my wanting to change my life completely as it has been one of my main reasons for surviving up until this point. I have hopes to tour once again and I know how demanding life on the road can be so I definitely needed to get in shape.

Having a goal, a passion, working towards fulfilling your life purpose is a huge plus when trying to adopt a new healthier life style, for me it is anyway. I think having such goals are big motivators. Depending on what your passion is, it can also assist you in many ways in your life. For me, rehearing is a workout in itself. Face it we need a reason for getting up in morning besides the damn alarm going off. Choosing a destination is vital to anyone looking to get somewhere in life so choose wisely.

I started rehearsing a half hour set after working out. Some days I did it before but I left it up to how I was feeling. After a while seeing I was enjoying it so much I bumped it up to doing an hour. I put my all into every set rocking the mic as if I am performing live on stage. I was not only working up a good sweat, I noticed that I was getting in between 5000 to 7000 steps per set.

Some studies say that getting in 10,000 steps per day you can burn enough calories to actually lose weight. Depending on your job and daily routine getting in 10,000 steps per day can be a task. When I didn’t rehearse even running some errands on a good day I would get in somewhere between 4000 - 5000. With the rehearsals I was easily clearing 10,000 steps on a regular.

I had run some rehearsals before I started training and let me tell you, I could easily tell I was out of shape. A 15 minute set was rough. I was definitely feeling like fat Elvis. After only a few months I was getting through an hour set no problem. On good days I was doing two rehearsals per day. I felt better than I did years ago when I was touring. The combination of daily exercise, eating healthy, meditating and also feeding my brain healthy reading material as I have said before flows over into all types of different areas of your daily life. This was no exception. Rapping, being an Emcee is like 90% confidence. If you don’t feel good about yourself, believe in yourself and believe in what you are doing it will definitely show. I believe that goes with anything you do. If you go for a job interview with your head down and shoulders drooping it can cost you getting the job. All the work I was putting in was paying off in more ways than I thought it would. This was a different kind of grinding and I was feeling it.

I wasn’t looking for shows or tours just yet, but I was and am training for the day the call comes. Preparedness is important and the plan has been and is to get prepared and stay prepared for whatever comes my way. If you want to check out my musical background jump over to my Spotify. OH and for anyone thinking 55 is way to old to be doing the rapping thing. Have you ever seen one those facebook videos when a young thug harasses an elder and ends up getting his ass handed to him? There’s a few of them out there. Yea, just keep that in mind. It’s Hiphop AND YOU DON’T STOP!
